Suffice it to say, your oral history on the gentleman is quite garbled. My information is based on British army records as well the hard research of Allan Gray who is related to the Munros, as are my family in the dim and distant Inverness past.

I attach Henry’s short bio from my book (which details every raid, battle and campaign your ancestor fought in, from the Ticonderoga campaign to fighting Cherokees in South Carolina-Tennessee.

- Individual reports for Luke KNOWLTON (1738-) and Luke KNOWLTON (1775-1840) and Thomas KNOWLTON II ((1670-)
- partial letter from Jack Jeffries:
"
Following up [on] SELEUCIA KNOWLTON, I found that she was the daughter of a 'late U.E.L", LUKE KNOWLTON, Esq, Yeoman at Stukely in 1796. Luke was the son of the Honorable LUKE KNOWLTON, a Judge of the Vermont Colony/State Supreme Court, who resided at Newfane, County of Windham, in the extreme south of VT, where his three sons were born. (See "Thomas Knowlton" Descendants Chart). His eldest son, SILAS, also immigrated to Canada, and his son was Lt.Col. PAUL HOLLAND KNOWLTON, who founded the Village of Knowlton, (now the Town of Lac Brome).

The Honorable LUKE was born in Shrewsbury, MA, where he married SARAH HOLLAND after whose family his grandson, Lt Col Paul, was named. Judge

Luke's father was EZEKIEL, born in the Atlantic coastal town of Ipswich, MA, about 50 km N of Boston. Ezekiel was the son of a THOMAS KNOWLTON <II>, who was also son of a THOMAS KNOWLTON G>. See Pedigree Chart for EZEKIEL KNOWLTON.

Beyond this point in time, the birth of Thomas CD in 1670, the IGI-MASSACHUSETTS does not list any more Knowlton Ancestors. You will note that I speculate that Thomas <I> must have been born about 1640, which is getting pretty close to the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The "Mayflower" sailed in 1620.

So it is quite possible that your Knowlton ancestors were among the founders of America!

However, where they originated from before that is not recorded in the references I consulted. Guppy does not list the name anywhere in Great Britain! Probably, they had never been "yeomen", but rather: merchants or noblemen? The latter is most likely, considering the information given about KNOWLTON & deKNOLTON in Bardsley's DICTIONARY of ENGLISH & WELSH SURNAMES... See "Individual Data" sheet for Thomas Knowlton <I>, RIN:1446; ID No: AEW-1760.

While in Knowlton, which town was founded by [] Col. Paul Holland Knowlton, you should try to visit the Brome County Historical Society Library, located in the Knowlton Museum. It is reputed to have an extensive manuscript collection.

RE: Copy of: Glad you liked Knowlton info

Carla Glad you got all the stuff.
I am at home with a BAD cold right now but will copy the Bible transcriptions next week and send them on.
So who is your husband, our new cousin?

Are you able to check the Knowlton web page? I hear that you do not have a lot of time to work on this so don't worry about replying until you get the pages I will send. I am sure my
message was pretty garbled, but I hope either Jill Russell or Doreen Knowlton Smillie will contact you. I bet the email sender will mess up what I try to "draw" here, but here is a
sketch of our tree:

Ephraim (b 1676) & Katherine Griffin
|
John (?) Robert
| |
Thomas (b.1720) Ephraim (b. ca. 1740)
| | | | |
Ephraim Enoch Thomas Stephen Abijah
(b. 1756) (b. 1760) (b. 1761) (b. 1776) (b. 1782)
You-all are descended from the last Ephraim; Doreen, from Enoch; Jill, from the last Thomas; and I from Stephen. Thomas (b. 1720) had other sons too, beginning in 1747. They lived
all lived in Westchester Co., NY, until Thomas (b. 1720) moved off up the Hudson River around 1750.

It has taken us a LONG time and a LOT of work to figure this all out together as almost no records remain for the 18th c. in Westchester Co. and not a lot of Knowltons descend from
this branch.

HISTORY OF LEEDS AND GRENVILLE, Ontario, from 1749 to 1879 with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of some of its prominent men and pioneers, by Thad. W. H. Leavitt, published 1879,(my copy was reprinted in 1972) Originally published in 1879 by the Recorder Press, Brockville, my copy was published by Mika Silk Screening Limited, Belleville, On in 1972, this book is still available but hard to find, I belong to the Leeds and Grenville mailing list and ive read people are looking for this book and when they do, it costs over $40, myself, picked it up a library sale for a $1, my luckiest find!!!!

On page 103 of the Leeds book a Enoch Knowlton was a guide to a Peter Seeley, who owned a blacksmith business, this Seeley guy was heading for the Bay of Quinte area from Connecticut. Knowlton was working with a Stephen Smith as guides to Mr. Seeley. It says Knowlton, Seeley and Smith came down the St. Lawrence on a raft. "They took aboard a small quantity of provisions, sufficient, as they thought to supply their wants until they reached Cole's Ferry, where there as a settlement. In consequence of adverse winds, they were delayed, the provisions were exhausted and they were compelled to subsist for three days upon wintergreen berries, which they found on a small island. Seeley always regarded the discovery of the berries as a special mark of divine providence, as it was at a season the year when berries of that kind are never known to be ripe. The party reached Cole's Ferry in the night and had only sufficient strength remaining to make their presence known by cries. Fortunately they were heard. A canoe came out and took them to the shore, where they were cared for until they recovered. Knowlton moved to Bastard, etc. etc."

page 122 notes on the first settlers of Bastard Twp.

"Thomas Knowlton, the progenitor of the Knowlton family in the municipality, settled near the middle of town" (im assuming he is talking about Delta)

"Jeremiah Day was one of the first settlers, and from Mr. Day the settlement received its name Daytown. Samuel Day, a son of Jeremiah is a Baptist Missionary in Brumah."( Daytown is located just outside of Delta, my greatgreatgrand parents had a log cabin build there, it was still there up till a couple of years ago)

Charles Henry Wright Stocking, D.D., The Knickerbocker Press (1897). The work was dedicated to our Lt. Daniel Knowlton, hero of the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars. The dedication reads as follows: "In Reverent and loving Memory of Lieutenant Daniel Knowlton of the Continental Army, The Resolute Patriot, The Fearless Scout, The Intrepid Soldier, The Upright Man, whose eminent services to his Imperiled State and Country amply merit this his first Public Memorial, This Volume is humbly dedicated, by the Author." The name comes from the old English, "cnoll" (middle English, "knolle"), meaning a small rounded hill or mound and the old English "tun", meaning an enclosed place, homestead or village; so Knowlton means town, village or place on the hill.137"

Lucy Knowlton BROOKS

1 William Richard Cutter, AM, New England Families (New York, 1913), ISBN - 0-8063-4612-4. ". On February 15, 1827, he married Lucy Knowlton Brooks, who died February 8. 1856, and was buried beside her husband in the Baptist Cemetery at Westford. She was born February 27, 1801. daughter of Simeon Brooks. who was born in 1767, and died in 1844. Simeon Brooks married Eunice Bass, and had three children, Juliana, Lucy Knowlton. and Maria. Simeon, was son of Deacon Abijah Brooks of Ashford, Connecticut, who married Lucy Knowlton and had twelve children. He was a deacon in the Ashford Presbyterian Church, and was a prominent man. His wife was distinguished in the community for her many excellent qualities. It is said of her, that a short time before her death as she was about to retire for the night, she saw a light fiash up before her, at times brilliant and then fading away. and she called this a warning of her approaching death. She lived but a few days longer, dying April 16, 1820. She was daughter of William Knowlton. who was born in 1706, and married, in 1728, Martha Pinder of Boxford, who was of a noble ancestry. Colonel Thomas Knowlton, the noted revolutionary soldier, and Lieutenant Daniel Knowlton. were sons of William. He was born in Ipswich, but removed to West Boxford. He spent his last days in Ashford, where he moved about 1740. He was son of Nathaniel Knowlton Jr., who was born in 1683. In 1703 he married Mary Burnett, and they had six children. Nathaniel Knowlton, father of Nathaniel Jr., was born in 1658, and married Deborah Jewett in 1682. They had seven children. He was a very prominent man. and held a high position in the colony. An old historian says of him: "Though honored by men he did not forget to honor his God." He died in 1726 and his wife in 1743. He was son of John Knowlton Jr., who was born in 1633, and married Sarah Whipple. They had ten children. His father, John, was born in 1610, and married Marjery Wilson, and they had three children. Captain William Knowlton, father of John, was at least part owner of a vessel in which he, with his wife and children, sailed to America. He died on the voyage, and a gravestone erected to his memory still stands in Shelburne, Canada. His wife and children moved to Hingham, Massachusetts. Captain William Knowlton, father of Captain William, was born in 1584, and married Ann Elizabeth Smith. He was son of Richard Knowlton, who was born in Kent in 1553, and married Elizabeth Cautize on July 15, 1577. They had four children. The coat-of-arms of the Knowlton family is: "Argent, a chevron, between crowns and ducal coronets sable." The crest is a demi-lion, rampant. The motto is: "Vi at Virtute."."

2 William Richard Cutter, AM, New England Families. "On February 15, 1827, he married Lucy Knowlton Brooks, who died February 8. 1856, and was buried beside her husband in the Baptist Cemetery at Westford."

Hello Cameron, My name is Nancy Carabine Idell . My grandfather was George the youngest of Patrick Carabine and Jeanette Knowlton who lived in or around Meridan Ct. Family history tells me that Jeanette died in a fire when the boys were young at that time Patrick was nowhere around. The grandparents Knowlton took the boys and raised them . Then he returned and later moved to Philadelphia around 1910, and died there. John Carabine the middle child was a twin that was also named George but who died very young. and as was the custom in those days the next child took the name of the dead child. I have hit a brick wall on this family but if you have any information I would really appreciate it no matter how small.
.
